Electric gear: lamé, body cord & when you need it

What electric scoring gear is, and why beginners don't need it yet. · Typical price $100-250

Electric gear is what connects a fencer to the scoring box. Beginners fence "dry" for months, so this comes later.

• Lamé: a conductive vest/jacket marking the valid target, needed for foil (torso) and sabre (above the waist). Épée needs none (the whole body scores).
• Body cord: the wire from your weapon to the reel/box. Buy two, they fail.
• Mask cord (foil/sabre): connects a conductive mask to the lamé.
• When to buy: only once your fencer competes in electric events. Ask the club first.
