Most clubs start kids around 7-8, and there's no upper limit, plenty of adults start in their 30s or 40s. It rewards focus and problem-solving over size or strength.

Three weapons, three games. Foil and épée are point-thrusting; sabre adds slashing and is fastest. Beginners usually start on foil or épée, but let the club guide you, and know kids can switch.

Yes, it's one of the safer sports. The gear is rated to withstand far more than a blade delivers, blades are blunt and flexible, and injury rates are low compared with contact and ball sports.

A few Division I programs offer athletic money, but most fencers get recruited support plus academics; Ivy and D3 give no athletic scholarships but support recruited fencers. See colleges with fencing.
