How to repair your fencing equipment
Gear breaks at the worst possible moment, usually five minutes before your bout. A few basic repairs are worth learning because they save money and the panic of a dead weapon on tournament day. Others are best left to a club armorer. Here is the honest split, one piece at a time.
Replace a broken foil or epee tip
The point assembly is where most breakages happen, and it is the repair every electric fencer should know.
- Foil. The tip is held by two tiny screws on the side of the barrel. Unscrew them, lift out the old tip assembly (barrel, point, spring and contact), fit the new one, and screw it back down. The screws are magnetic-small, so work over a tray. After reassembly, test with a body cord and box, or a spare, that a press registers and a release resets.
- Epee. The epee point is more finicky because it depends on precise shims under the tip. Unscrew the two point screws, replace the point, and set the travel with the correct shims so the tip has the right amount of movement. Too little and it registers on its own, too much and it misses valid touches. If you are not confident with shim thickness, this is a good one to hand to an armorer.
Whichever weapon, finish by checking the tip against the rulebook feel: a foil point should need a firm press, an epee point should not fire when you tap the shim flat.
Fix or rewire a body cord
A body cord that only works when you wiggle it is the single most common cause of a phantom "no light" on the strip. The wires inside are thin and they fatigue where the cord flexes most, right at the plugs.
- Diagnose first. Plug the cord into a tester or a scoring box and flex it near each end. If the light flickers, the break is at that plug. A cheap continuity tester or multimeter finds it in seconds.
- Reseat or re-solder. Many body cord plugs unscrew so you can re-seat a loose wire or re-solder a broken one to its pin. Keep the wire colors on the same pins they came off. On the two-prong bayonet or three-prong end, a steady hand and a fine soldering iron do the job.
- Know when to retire it. Cords are consumable. If the wire is fraying inside the sheath or you have re-soldered the same joint twice, replace the cord rather than chasing the fault. They are inexpensive next to the frustration of a bout lost to a bad cord.
Find and fix dead spots on a lame
Your lame (the conductive overjacket in foil and sabre) has to register touches everywhere on the valid target. Over time sweat and washing wear through the conductive threads and create dead spots that quietly cost you touches.
- Test it. Armorers use a weighted testing tip and an ohmmeter, walking the point across the whole surface and watching for spots where resistance jumps. At home, a multimeter with one lead clipped to the lame collar and the other probing the surface shows you where conductivity drops.
- Patch small areas. A worn patch can sometimes be repaired with conductive thread or a stitched-in conductive patch, tied back into the surrounding weave so it reads as one surface.
- When it fails, replace it. If dead spots are spreading or the lame fails a test across large areas, it is done. Blade care and rust
Blades are steel, and steel rusts, especially in humid climates and gym bags. A rusted blade is weaker and more likely to snap, which is a safety issue, not just a cosmetic one.
- Wipe the blade down after every session to remove sweat and moisture.
- Light surface rust comes off with fine steel wool or a fine emery cloth, worked gently along the blade. Follow with a very light wipe of oil in damp climates.
- Never store a blade damp or leave it baking in a hot car. Heat and moisture are what kill both blades and electronics.
- Inspect for a permanent bend or a crack near the tang or guard. A blade with a sharp kink or a crack is finished, retire it, because a blade that snaps mid-bout is dangerous.
When to repair versus replace
A simple rule: repair the consumable, replace the safety item. Tips, springs, barrels, shims and body cord solder joints are cheap, quick fixes worth doing. A cracked mask, a torn jacket or plastron, a blade with a crack or a hard bend, and a lame that fails across large areas are not worth nursing, they are what stand between you and an injury or a failed equipment check. Spend the repair time on the small stuff and the money on replacing anything structural.
