Is fencing safe?
Yes, and not just reassuringly-yes, but statistically-yes: fencing has one of the lowest injury rates of any Olympic sport, safer by the numbers than soccer, basketball or gymnastics. The sport looks dangerous, which is part of its charm, but the danger is theater.
The reasons: blades are blunt and flexible and bend on contact; masks are tested to withstand forces no blade delivers; jackets, plastrons and gloves are puncture-rated; and the rules stop the action instantly when anything is off. The injuries that do happen are ordinary sports injuries, ankle rolls and muscle pulls from footwork, not blade injuries.
Expect the occasional small bruise, especially in épée. That's the sport's whole injury story for most fencers.
