Fencing gear checklist by level

Buy in this order and you'll never overspend. Each stage adds only what you actually need next.

Just trying it

Nothing to buy. Wear athletic clothes and clean court shoes; the club lends the mask, jacket and weapon.

Sticking with it (recreational)

Buy a glove first, then a mask, then a jacket + plastron and a practice weapon, or a starter bundle. Knickers and long socks when ready.

Competing locally

Add your own knickers, chest protector (required for girls/women), a second glove, and start on electric gear for your weapon (lamé if foil/sabre, body cords).

Regional / national

Two of everything that fails (body cords, weapons, masks), a competition-rated (higher-N) set, a roller bag, and dedicated fencing shoes.

New to it all? Start with the beginner equipment guide or compare starter kits.
