How hard is fencing, really?

Fencing is often called "physical chess", and both halves are true. It's genuinely athletic (explosive lunges, endless footwork, real endurance) and just as much a thinking game, which is exactly why it suits kids who love strategy more than ball sports.

How much effort at each level?

The learning curve is honest: a few months to be competent enough to enjoy bouting, years to be genuinely good. The upside, it rewards focus, patience and problem-solving, and you can start at almost any age and keep going for life.
