How to buy a fencing mask
The one piece you never cheap out on, fit, rating and safety. · Typical price $60-110
The mask is the piece that keeps your fencer safe, so it's the one to get right.
- Get the rating right: masks are rated in newtons, 350N for recreational/club use, 1600N (FIE) for higher-level competition. Ask your club which you need.
- Fit is everything: snug but not tight, with a chin cup that sits properly and a back strap that holds it on. Try it on or follow the club's sizing chart.
- Never buy a questionable used mask: a dented mesh or any rust means retire it, that's the one place used gear isn't worth the savings.
- Foil & sabre need a conductive (lamé) mask to score electrically; épée uses a plain mask.
