Fencing equipment repair: tips, body cords, blades and dead spots

Short answer: most failures are the tip, the body cord, or the blade, and two of those you can fix yourself

Electric fencing gear fails in predictable places. A weapon that suddenly will not register a hit is almost always a broken tip or a dead body cord, both cheap and quick to fix at the club table. A blade that takes a set or cracks is the one you replace rather than repair. Here is how to diagnose and fix the common ones, and when to stop and buy new.

How does a fencing tip (point) work?

On a foil or epee the tip is a tiny spring-loaded switch. When you land a hit with enough force, the barrel pushes in, which breaks the circuit (foil) or makes it (epee), and the box registers. It is held together by two small screws and relies on a spring and a length of wire running down the blade. Because it is a moving mechanical part taking repeated impacts, it is the single most common thing to fail.

How to replace a broken foil or epee tip

  1. Undo the two tiny screws on the barrel with a fencing screwdriver (a jeweller's flat-head) and lift the tip assembly out.
  2. Check the pointwire in the blade groove. If it is frayed or broken, replace it while you are in there.
  3. Fit the new tip (spring, then contact), reseat the wire, and screw it back down snug but not overtightened.
  4. Re-glue the pointwire into the groove if it lifted, and test on a scoring box before you fence.

How to fix or rewire a body cord

Body cords die constantly because they get yanked, stepped on and coiled tightly. The symptom is an intermittent or missing signal that changes when you wiggle the cord. Test it with a body-cord tester; every club should have one. A broken cord usually fails at a connector or a snapped internal wire near the plug. You can re-solder a connector if you are handy, but honest advice: body cords are cheap, and a fresh one is more reliable than a field repair. Carry two spares and swap rather than fix mid-competition.

Dead spots on a lame, and how to find them

A lame, the conductive jacket in foil and sabre, develops dead spots where the metal thread wears through, usually under the arm and along fold lines. Test it by touching every area with a weapon tip and a tester; areas that do not register are dead. Small dead spots can be patched with conductive thread or a lame patch, but once a lame has many, or fails at a valid target, it will not pass a referee's check and it is time to replace it.

How often do blades break, and when do you replace one?

With normal club fencing a blade can last anywhere from a few months to a couple of years. Competitive fencers who train hard break them more often. Replace, do not repair, a blade when it takes a permanent bend (a set) you cannot straighten, develops a visible crack or deep nick, or snaps. A slightly bent blade can sometimes be straightened gently once or twice, but a cracked blade is a safety issue. Retire it. Blades are a consumable part, not a repairable one.

What is worth repairing vs replacing

A mask that fails its punch test is never a repair. Retire it, every time.

How does this tip work, and why will my point not register? The tip is a spring switch. A non-registering weapon is nearly always a broken tip, loose barrel screws, or a dead body cord. Check those three, in that order, on a scoring box.

How often do blades break? Anywhere from a few months to a couple of years depending on how hard you train. Replace a blade at the first crack or permanent set, and never fence a cracked blade.
