Fencing gear sizing for kids

Sizing is the question that trips up every new fencing parent, and getting it wrong is how families waste money. The good news: most clubs lend beginner gear for the first months, so you rarely have to guess on day one, and when you do buy, the sizing is simpler than it looks. Here is what actually matters, piece by piece.

Mask

Sized S, M or L by head circumference. Measure around the head just above the ears and eyebrows, and follow the maker's chart. The fit should be snug with the chin cup resting on the chin, no rocking side to side. This is the one piece you never buy big to grow into, an oversized mask is a safety problem. Not sure of your size? Try the mask size finder, then see the mask buying guide.

Jacket and knickers

Jackets are sized mostly by chest measurement (with a height cross-check) and come in child sizes. A little room is fine, a lot is not, because a loose jacket rides up and leaves gaps. Knickers fasten below the knee and pair with long socks that cover any gap. More in the jacket guide.

Glove

You only need one, for the weapon hand, sized by hand length or a simple S/M/L. It should be snug like a sport glove, not loose. Coaches often say buy the glove first, since it is the piece clubs lend least. See the glove guide.

Shoes

Beginners do not need fencing-specific shoes. Clean, flat court or indoor athletic shoes with good grip are fine for the first year or two. When your fencer is ready, the shoes guide covers the upgrade.

Blade length

Blades come in sizes, and kids use shorter ones. Young beginners typically start on a size 0 or 2 blade and move up to the adult size 5 as they grow. Do not guess this, your coach will tell you the right size for your child's age and weapon. See the weapon guide.

Lame (foil and sabre only)

The conductive lame worn over the jacket is sized to match the jacket. Epee fencers do not need one. If your child fences foil or sabre competitively, size it the same as the jacket.

Buy to grow, within reason. A slightly roomy jacket or knickers to get a season or two of growth is smart. An oversized mask or a blade that is too long is not, both hurt safety and technique. When in doubt, size for fit now and replace as they grow.

Where to buy and how to save

Once you know sizes, get the whole picture in the beginner equipment guide, compare starter kits, and find the cheap routes in where to find discount gear. Still unsure on a size? Ask your club, they fit kids for gear all the time and will happily point you right.
